Deftones’ 1997 second album Around the Fur is where the band’s sound truly begins to open up. Still crushingly heavy, it pushes beyond the confines of nu-metal with atmosphere, tension and a strangely sensual edge that would become central to everything that followed.
Chino Moreno moves from whispered vulnerability to full-throated fury while Stephen Carpenter’s enormous guitar riffs collide with Abe Cunningham’s explosive drumming and Chi Cheng’s muscular bass. The result is an album that can feel claustrophobic one minute and almost dreamlike the next.
Home to two of the band’s defining songs, My Own Summer (Shove It) and Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away), Around the Fur remains one of Deftones’ essential records: abrasive, atmospheric and utterly distinctive.
