The Artist

James emerged from Manchester in the early ’80s, before the city’s music scene became a mythology of its own. They were there before Madchester had a name, shaped by post-punk independence, restless experimentation and a refusal to settle into one sound for too long.

Fronted by Tim Booth, the band built its identity around movement and emotional risk. Booth’s voice could be fragile, ecstatic or confrontational, while his lyrics circled faith, desire, doubt and the uneasy business of being alive. Around him, James developed a sound that could shift from wiry indie rock to sweeping, communal anthems without losing its humanity.

After years of cult devotion, false starts and near-collapse, the band broke through with songs including ‘Sit Down’ and ‘Come Home’. Yet commercial success never made them predictable. Their greatest strength has always been reinvention, following instinct even when the safer road was clearly signposted.

More than four decades on, James remain one of Britain’s most resilient and emotionally generous bands, still evolving rather than simply preserving the past.

The Record

Released in 1993, Laid captures James at their most open, intuitive and beautifully unsettled.

Produced by Brian Eno, the album strips away some of the grandeur of their previous work and replaces it with space, atmosphere and immediacy. The performances feel lived-in rather than perfected, allowing silence, hesitation and accidental beauty to become part of the music.

The title track may be its most famous moment, but it is only one flash of colour within a far deeper record. ‘Sometimes’ builds from gathering tension into euphoric release, ‘Say Something’ turns uncertainty into shimmering pop, and ‘Out to Get You’ leaves loneliness almost completely exposed. Elsewhere, ‘Five-O’, ‘P.S.’ and ‘Skindiving’ drift into stranger, more meditative territory.

Laid sits at the point where alternative rock, folk intimacy and ambient experimentation begin to blur. It feels immediate without being obvious, intimate without becoming small, and more revealing with every return.

Why We Chose It

Because this is what happens when a band stops forcing the moment and learns to trust instinct.

Laid didn’t chase the grand scale of James’ earlier work. Instead, Brian Eno helped them loosen their grip, leaving space for intimacy, atmosphere and the unexpected. The result is a record that feels spontaneous without being unfinished, and emotionally exposed without ever becoming overwrought.

It is far more than its famous title track. Beneath that burst of desire and chaos lies an album full of longing, spiritual uncertainty, loneliness and release.

It rewards repeat listening, revealing small details, strange textures and emotional shifts that can pass unnoticed the first time around.

More than three decades later, Laid still feels restless, human and beautifully unresolved.
