R.E.M.’s 1983 debut, Murmur, arrived fully formed: strange, jangly, atmospheric and unlike almost anything else happening in American rock at the time.
Built around Peter Buck’s chiming guitar, Mike Mills and Bill Berry’s deceptively muscular rhythm section, and Michael Stipe’s famously elusive vocals, Murmur turned mystery into a strength. Songs like ‘Radio Free Europe’, ‘Talk About the Passion’ and ‘Perfect Circle’ feel immediate without ever giving everything away.
It’s a record that helped redraw the map for alternative and indie rock, but decades later it still sounds wonderfully singular rather than simply influential.
A genuinely essential R.E.M. album, and one of the great debut records.
