Fontaines D.C. continue their remarkable evolution with Dopamine Chamber, their fifth studio album and another bold leap forward for one of the most compelling bands of their generation. Produced by James Ford, the record finds the Irish five-piece pushing well beyond their post-punk beginnings, embracing electronics, orchestral arrangements, expansive melodies and an increasingly adventurous approach to songwriting.
The album builds on the ambition of Romance, but ventures into even more unpredictable territory. Grian Chatten's unmistakable vocals remain at its emotional centre, while the band move between brooding atmospherics, explosive guitar passages and moments of extraordinary tenderness. There's a confidence to the experimentation, with each stylistic shift contributing to an album that rewards being heard from beginning to end.
Highlights include the striking 'Six Shot Morning', the emotionally charged 'One Man' and 'Where Is Gone?', featuring Rosalía in a collaboration that broadens the band's sonic world without compromising their identity. Elsewhere, 'Marianne' demonstrates their increasingly sophisticated melodic instincts, while the closing 'Inmate' brings the record to a suitably dramatic conclusion.
Dopamine Chamber captures Fontaines D.C. at their most ambitious, restless and creatively fearless. A band continuing to expand the possibilities of its sound, with little interest in standing still.
