Soundgarden hit another level on Badmotorfinger. Released in 1991, their third album is a brutal, twisting collision of heavy metal, grunge, punk and psychedelic rock, built around Chris Cornell’s extraordinary voice, Kim Thayil’s crooked guitar riffs and one of the most powerful rhythm sections of the era.

Rusty Cage kicks the door in immediately, Outshined follows with one of the band’s defining riffs, and Jesus Christ Pose is pure controlled violence. But Badmotorfinger is far more than its singles. Slaves & Bulldozers crawls and explodes across nearly seven minutes, Searching With My Good Eye Closed turns heavy rock into something strangely hypnotic, while Room A Thousand Years Wide and Mind Riot show just how adventurous Soundgarden had become.

Produced by Soundgarden with Terry Date, the album catches the band at the perfect point between the raw force of their earlier work and the broader ambition that would soon produce Superunknown. Dense, strange, muscular and absolutely enormous, Badmotorfinger remains one of the essential heavy records of the early ’90s.
