Includes Sun Giant EP
Released in 2008, Fleet Foxes is the debut album from the Seattle-based five-piece, arriving with a fully formed sense of identity and purpose. Self-described as “not much of a rock band,” Fleet Foxes instead leaned into baroque harmonic pop, choral folk traditions, and the simple, shared joy of singing together. The warmth and sincerity of the record is immediate — a sound rooted in communal voices rather than volume or virtuosity, and one that quickly set them apart from their peers.
Recorded with the help of credit cards, minimum wages, tip money, friends, and family, the album followed the band’s Sun Giant EP, with family friend Phil Ek guiding both releases. Drawing from folk music, pop, gospel, sacred harp singing, film scores, and musical traditions stretching from Ireland to Japan, the songs explore the natural world, family, lost love, and mortality. As Robin Pecknold put it, the goal was simply to make something that honestly reflected who they were — citizens of the western United States who love all kinds of music and, above all, love singing. The record’s enduring resonance suggests they succeeded.
