Released in 1998, Music Has the Right to Children is the debut studio album from Scottish duo Boards of Canada and one of the most quietly influential electronic records of its era. Built from hazy synths, warped samples, and an uncanny sense of nostalgia, the album feels less like a collection of songs and more like a half-remembered broadcast from childhood. It introduced a sound that was warm yet unsettling, grounding electronic music in memory, atmosphere, and emotion rather than dancefloor intent.
Drawing on analogue textures, educational film samples, and a deep sense of place, the album established Boards of Canada’s singular musical language — playful on the surface, but threaded with unease beneath. Its influence has stretched across ambient, IDM, hip-hop, and experimental pop for more than two decades. This is a record we return to often, one that continues to reveal new details with every listen.
