Adelaide four-piece Swapmeet make a striking arrival with Mount Zero, their debut album and a beautifully realised collision of 1990s alternative rock, slowcore, shoegaze and melodic indie. Released through Los Angeles label Winspear, the record draws on the hazy guitar textures and emotional vulnerability of an earlier era without sounding trapped in nostalgia. Think the bittersweet intimacy of Snail Mail, the restless guitar interplay of Yo La Tengo and the dreamy melancholy of Mazzy Star.

Following their acclaimed 2024 EP Oxalis, Swapmeet have emerged as one of Australia's most promising young alternative bands, collecting South Australian Music Awards and earning Best Emerging Artist honours at SXSW Sydney. On Mount Zero, they turn their attention to the messy business of growing up, exploring first loves, heartbreak, regret and the uncomfortable process of figuring out who you are.

Written, recorded and produced collaboratively by all four members, the album is rich in detail without losing its wonderfully unpolished character. Guitars shimmer and distort, melodies drift between sweetness and unease, and the shared vocals of Maxwell Elphick and Venus O'Broin give the songs an intimate, conversational quality. From the insistent opener I Know! to the sprawling closer My Heart Breaks II, Mount Zero is a confident debut from a band finding its own place within Australia's flourishing independent music scene.
