Released in 1998 by French duo Air, it arrived like a puff of cool smoke drifting through a late-night apartment: soft lights glowing, city humming outside, everything suddenly feeling just a little more cinematic. Nearly three decades on, it still sounds futuristic in the way only truly timeless records can.
Built from warm analogue synths, elastic basslines, whispered grooves and melodies that seem to float rather than land, Moon Safari became a landmark for downtempo electronica without ever feeling trapped by the genre.
Tracks like ‘Sexy Boy’, ‘Kelly Watch the Stars’ and the impossibly gorgeous ‘All I Need’ move with a kind of slow-motion elegance, while instrumental pieces drift by like postcards from some imagined retro-future where lounge music, kosmische and French pop all melted together under neon light.
There’s an uncanny emotional pull to the album too. Beneath the cool surfaces sits something deeply romantic and faintly melancholic, the sound of two musicians chasing atmosphere over ego. And yes, it was once famously voted the #1 album to make love to, which honestly tracks. This thing practically turns the room into velvet.
