Fourth album in, and The New Pornographers did what great bands do — they shifted gears. Challengers dials back the hyperactive pop and leans into something warmer, more reflective. It’s slower, softer, and often stunning — a record that rewards repeat listens and reveals its layers over time. Still packed with hooks, harmonies and A.C. Newman’s sly brilliance, but this time Neko Case and Dan Bejar get more space to stretch. A mid-career gem for one of indie rock’s most quietly consistent supergroups.
