Previously a Waxx Lyrical Record Of The Month.
Released in 1998, XO is American singer and songwriter Elliott Smith's fourth album, major label debut and the second last record released within his short lifetime. It follows three independently released albums on indie label Kill Rock Stars yet was the monstrously popular film Good Will Hunting, featuring a few of Smith's songs on the soundtrack, that would see the artist flirt with the mainstream more than ever before, even scoring an Oscar nomination.
With the internet in its infancy, Smith's owes part of his success to literal word of mouth following a performance at the Oscars with none other than Celine Dion. He signed to a major label and his craft exploded. Working with Beck collaborators Rob Schnapf and Tom Rothrock, Smith built upon his scratchy and lo-fi four track recordings of old, took inspiration from lush 1970's singer/songwriter music and created an orchestral pop masterwork.
