Melbourne garage-rock heroes Eddy Current Suppression Ring make a surprise return with In Light of Recent Events, their first full-length album since 2019's All in Good Time. Released without fanfare in May 2026, the record finds one of Australia's most beloved underground bands doing precisely what they've always done best: ignoring industry expectations, keeping things gloriously uncomplicated and making thrilling, unvarnished rock music entirely on their own terms.

Developed through weekly closed-door jams throughout 2025, the album captures the band's unmistakable chemistry, with Brendan Suppression's wonderfully unpolished vocals riding the jagged, economical guitar work of Eddy Current (Mikey Young) and the tightly wound rhythms of Danny Current and Rob Solid. There's a darker, more politically conscious undercurrent this time around, with songs reflecting modern anxieties, personal frustrations and the increasingly strange business of being human. Yet the music retains that irresistible combination of nervous energy, hypnotic repetition and raw, instinctive groove that made the band such a vital force in Australian independent music.

From the wiry urgency of Self Sabotage and Hard To Be Moved to the restless momentum of Swimming Hole and the expansive closing track Past And Future, In Light of Recent Events is a reminder of just how much Eddy Current Suppression Ring can achieve with seemingly so little. Recorded in 2025 at Squires Loft, it's an album that sounds refreshingly unconcerned with contemporary trends, made by four musicians who know exactly what makes their band tick.
