Nate Amos has spent years building one of the most fascinating catalogues in contemporary independent music, both as one half of experimental duo Water From Your Eyes and under his solo moniker This Is Lorelei. With The Singer In My Band, his first album for Matador Records, Amos trades some of his more unpredictable sonic adventures for something warmer and more grounded, drawing on classic American songwriting, alt-country, bluegrass and beautifully crafted indie rock.
Following the breakout success of 2024's Box For Buddy, Box For Star, Amos wrote much of his new material while touring, allowing melodies and stories to develop during long hours spent travelling between shows. The resulting album is populated by an eccentric cast of characters, misfits and restless souls, their stories unfolding through wonderfully conversational lyrics and deceptively simple arrangements. Produced and largely performed by Amos himself, the record also features contributions from his family, including banjo playing from his father, bluegrass musician Bob Amos, and backing vocals from his sister Sarah.
There's a timeless quality to these eleven songs, from the breezy, infectious melodies of Billy Came Back and Watching Heaven Fall to the darker emotional territory of Oh No Now My and the tender closing moments of Don't You Cry in Lonesomeness. Amos has a rare gift for making familiar musical ingredients feel entirely his own, balancing humour, heartbreak and an occasionally crooked sense of melody. The Singer In My Band is an intimate, wonderfully assured record from a songwriter increasingly deserving of his place among the most compelling voices in modern American indie music.
