Soul music runs deep in the Womack family, and with their self-titled debut album, sisters Kucha, Zeimani and BG Womack prove that musical royalty is more than a matter of bloodlines. Granddaughters of the legendary Sam Cooke, nieces of Bobby Womack and daughters of the duo Womack & Womack, these three have quite the family history to live up to. Fortunately, they've inherited the talent to match.
Released through the ever-reliable Daptone Records, The Womack Sisters is a glorious collection of classic soul, gospel-infused harmonies and deeply personal storytelling. Produced by Gabriel Roth, the album draws on the rich traditions of 1960s and '70s soul while remaining firmly rooted in the present. Lush strings, punchy horns and beautifully understated arrangements provide the backdrop for three extraordinary voices, each with its own personality, power and emotional depth.
There's plenty of substance beneath those gorgeous melodies, too. Opening track 'Chauffeur' tackles the everyday struggle of making ends meet, drawing on the sisters' experiences working as rideshare drivers, while 'You Went Away Too Long' delivers irresistible vintage soul. Elsewhere, the tender 'I Am Your Season' showcases Kucha's remarkable vocal warmth, and 'Monster' gives BG room to demonstrate her formidable range.
Having spent their childhood travelling the world and performing alongside their parents, The Womack Sisters have taken the long road to their debut. The result is an album that honours an extraordinary musical heritage without being overshadowed by it. Timeless soul music from three women who have well and truly earned their place in the family business.
