Mötley Crüe hit their commercial and creative peak with Dr. Feelgood. Released in 1989, their fifth studio album tightened the chaos of their earlier records into something bigger, heavier and considerably sharper, powered by gigantic riffs, arena-sized choruses and Bob Rock’s muscular production. It became the band’s first album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
The title track kicks things into gear before Slice Of Your Pie and Rattlesnake Shake bring the sleaze, but it’s Kickstart My Heart that has become the album’s immortal centrepiece, a full-throttle hard rock anthem inspired by Nikki Sixx’s near-fatal overdose. Elsewhere, Without You provides the obligatory power-ballad breather, Same Ol’ Situation (S.O.S.) is pure glam-metal sugar rush, and Don’t Go Away Mad (Just Go Away) remains one of the band’s most irresistible songs.
Big, loud and gloriously excessive, Dr. Feelgood captures Mötley Crüe with everything dialled right into the red. The playing is tighter, the songwriting stronger and the production enormous without losing the grime that made them dangerous in the first place. For anyone wanting the Crüe at maximum horsepower, this is the one.
