A former Waxx Lyrical Record of the Month.
Released in 1993, Laid is the fifth studio album from Manchester's James and arguably the band's finest achievement. Produced by Brian Eno, it marked a shift away from the expansive, anthemic sound of their earlier records towards something more intimate, atmospheric and emotionally exposed. The result is an album of extraordinary warmth and vulnerability, where understated arrangements allow Tim Booth's distinctive voice and the band's remarkable musicianship to shine.
Inspired partly by their experiences touring with Neil Young, James embraced a more stripped-back approach, allowing songs to develop naturally rather than overwhelming them with production. Eno's influence is evident throughout, particularly in the spacious arrangements and subtle textures that give the record its unmistakable character. From the breathtaking opener 'Out to Get You' and the euphoric 'Sometimes (Lester Piggott)' to the aching beauty of 'Five-O' and the infectious title track, Laid captures a band operating at the height of its creative powers.
More than three decades later, Laid remains a wonderfully rewarding listen, balancing moments of exuberance with genuine tenderness and introspection. It's a record that reveals more of itself with every spin and a particularly cherished selection from the Waxx Lyrical Record of the Month archives.
