When your birthday rolls around, there’s only one sensible thing to do: rank your favourite Geese songs and let the internet argue with you about it. Annette Geneva has done the brave thing and put her cards on the table.
Having just left Australia after their first ever tour down under, Geese are, of course, the hottest ticket on the planet right now. Their album Getting Killed has only deepened the sense that this is a group operating on its own strange, electric wavelength.
Here are Annette’s picks, in no particular order. Debate respectfully… or don't. 🪶🎂
Top 5 Geese Songs To Hear Now (according to Annette Geneva)
1. ‘Low Era’
It’s such a seminal song for Geese. I’m absolutely obsessed with it. Not only is it danceable, it’s incredibly sexy. Those sharp guitars completely sucked me in. It also shows just how multi-faceted and experimental the band can be.
2. ‘Crusades
’This is the song I put on when I’m facing a decision that feels irreversible. The storytelling is addictive and the “wtf” factor plays out like a puzzle you don’t actually need to solve. Somehow I also find it romantic in ways it probably shouldn’t be.
3. ‘I See Myself’
A flicker of ego. Pure confidence, but cracked. I don’t know if it’s meant to be self-reflective, but the title suggests so. The songwriting on this album feels so much more developed and infectious. I picked this instead of ‘Cobra’ just to keep things interesting. The harmonies are a huge bonus, especially paired with those slithering, whisper-like vocals. Ugh. Mad about it.
4. ‘Au Pays du Cocaine’
Probably my most-played Geese song. The theatrics, the story, the lovesick lyrics… and that bloody video clip that completely destroyed me. “Baby, you can change and still choose me.” I quote it. People send it to me. My DMs are basically a Geese meme archive at this point. Always welcome.
5. ‘Husbands’
A quietly unsettling hymn wrestling with loneliness, devotion and the absurdity of love. It feels like hearing someone’s story through a wall and still understanding every image. That existential longing hits a little too close to home. One of my favourites.
