The Artist
A visionary who reshaped the sound of jazz across decades, Miles Davis was a restless innovator. With Kind of Blue, he introduced modal jazz to the world, creating a masterpiece that remains the best-selling jazz album of all time. His influence extends far beyond jazz — touching everything from rock to ambient to hip-hop — impacting a lot of our favourite artists, evident in the work of artists like Prince, Kendrick Lamar, Radiohead, Rick James, Carlos Santana and many others. His legacy continues to inspire musicians and listeners alike.
Davis wasn’t just a musical genius — he was style incarnate. A cultural icon who married funk queen Betty Davis, championed Black artistry, and constantly reinvented himself, he was as known for his cool as his creativity. Never one to look back, Miles kept pushing forward — and with Kind of Blue, the world followed.
The Record
An obvious choice? Maybe. A necessary one? Absolutely.
As winter settles in and the nights stretch long and still, we’re turning to a record that rewrote the rulebook — and then burned it for warmth. Kind of Blue is as essential as it gets: five movements of cool, modal jazz led by Miles Davis at his most restrained and radical. Released in 1959 and never out of print since, this isn’t just a classic — it’s the classic.
Much has been said about its perfection, but what makes Kind of Blue so enduring isn’t just its influence or execution — it’s how it makes you feel. Spacious. Mysterious. Impossibly smooth. Like a warm scotch for the soul.
Pressed on high-quality blue wax and housed in one of the most iconic sleeves in jazz history, this edition is ready to make itself at home on your turntable this winter.
Whether you’re a lifelong jazz head or just dipping a toe in the blue, this one belongs in your collection.
Why We Chose It
Winter in Australia, and there’s no better companion for a warm drink on a cold night than this slow, smoky masterpiece. Waxx Lyrical has never featured a jazz record — let alone anything from the fifties. But if we were ever going to crack that open, we had to dip a toe into the shallow end with something that speaks to everyone — even the ones who think they don’t like jazz. It had to be Kind of Blue.
It’s timeless, sure, but it also feels seasonal — built for quiet reflection, heavy blankets, and long, low evenings. A jazz record, yes. But more than that: a mood, a landmark, and the kind of album that makes the world slow down — just enough.
