Asta's 'Drip': The Art Of The Pop Hook

Ben Preece

8 Nov 2026

Asta promo shot, 2026, for Waxx Lyrical's Heatseeker column

A lot of artists spend their entire careers searching for the great pop hook. Asta seems to have the innate ability to knock them out over breakfast. Born Asta Binnie-Ireland, the Tasmanian singer-songwriter first captured Australia's attention in 2012, winning triple j's Unearthed High competition with the irresistible ‘My Heart Is On Fire’. She was just 17, but already possessed the kind of voice, melodic instinct and natural charisma that suggested something special was underway.

She hasn't disappointed since. Radio singles 'Escape' and 'I Need Answers' followed and provided more context to the inner workings of this burgeoning star. Her infectious collaboration with Allday, ‘Dynamite’, felt seismic and became one of 2015's best Australian pop singles, it earned a place in triple j's Hottest 100 as 'My Heart Is On Fire' did only a couple of year earlier. There have been national headline tours, appearances at Splendour in the Grass and Falls Festival, shows alongside Ellie Goulding, and 2017's excellent Shine EP, which cemented her transformation from acoustic ingénue into a gloriously assured disco-pop powerhouse. Along the way, she's developed an unmistakable musical identity, with one foot firmly planted in the golden age of '80s pop and the other on the dancefloor.

Now back in her native Tasmania, Asta is continuing to forge her own unique path. Her latest single, ‘DRIP’, is another ridiculously infectious slice of retro-pop, produced by longtime collaborators Cosmo's Midnight and inspired by the intoxicating, occasionally disastrous business of falling for someone. It's exuberant, cheeky and unmistakably Asta. With hooks for days and personality in spades, it's destined to become a fixture on summer playlists and a reminder of just how effortlessly she can deliver a pop banger. Behind all that effervescence, however, is an artist who's navigated the dizzying highs and bruising frustrations of the music industry, rediscovered the pleasure of songwriting and learned to value creative freedom over somebody else's definition of success.

Listen now — Asta's 'DRIP'

For our latest Heatseeker, we catch up with Asta to talk questionable romantic decisions, her love of a killer melody, life as an independent artist, the joys of a good op-shop bargain and why she's more than ready for a particularly wild summer.

First things first, congrats on ‘DRIP’ — another banger! What's the story behind

this one? And judging by your announcement, should we be preparing for a

particularly wild summer?

Thank you!! It’s about experiencing limerence for the first time and that pining feeling. Being caught up in that fantasy world when you first start seeing someone and ignoring all the red flags haha. I have definitely learnt my lesson there. I feel like a lot of my songs lean that way which is funny right? I probably need to see a therapist after this situationship but anyway I think we all really enjoy that euphoria in the early stages. I’m excited to be single again so yes i’ll be having a particularly wild summer.

You've teamed up with Cosmo's Midnight on production. How did that collaboration

come about, and what did they bring to the song that you might not have found on

your own?

Yes! I’ve been touring with them for quite a long time now and they actually produced my past few releases but one day they just randomly showed me the track that had been sitting on their hard drive for such a long time and were like, ‘we think this is your vibe if you want it’. I was obsesssssssed with it; the big 80s drums and the summery glistening guitars, they just do that feel-good prod so well which I'm always chasing. You've always had a wonderfully distinctive musical personality. How would youdescribe where you're at creatively right now? Does ‘DRIP’ feel like the beginning of a new chapter?

It really just feels like a solid extension of what I have been trying to do for a while now. It’s definitely a new chapter and evolution of Asta but it’s also like ‘oh this is very her, we get it now’. I’m just this retro diva that makes fun pop bangers. It’s really that simple.

We could feel your excitement in your announcement of the singlle. After all these years of making

music, do you still get the same butterflies putting something new into the world?

I do! And I think it feels especially different this time around not having any team and doing it all myself. It feels like I'm 17 again uploading a demo online. I have no idea what I'm doing and there is excitement in that for sure.

You've experienced the music industry from a few different angles. What have

those experiences taught you about the kind of artist you want to be, and perhaps

more importantly, the kind you don't?

I guess I did start out in the industry quite young, which reflecting on some of those times now were pretty crazy, only because I didn’t have the voice or direction to really have any control over it. The kind of artist I want to be now is someone who just has fun with the process and has little expectation of the outcome. It becomes stressful when you start thinking about ‘making it’ and so I’ve let that go for sure. Since getting a publishing deal I have really fallen in love with topline writing too. I love that side of the industry and getting to work on so many different projects. It’s a great way to stay active and be constantly improving as a writer.

You're releasing music independently. What does that freedom mean to you, and

what's the biggest challenge of doing things without the machinery of a label

behind you?

It’s pretty challenging for sure. You also have to understand I was only signed to a major label for six months when I was 19 so I really felt like I didn't experience it fully you know? It was like a fever dream. I definitely want to find a team though and really hope the project will resonate with someone one day because doing everything yourself can be a lot! I think the biggest challenge of all is not having any funding of course and I think my fans can hear that now (haha!) It can be painful not bringing your vision to complete life sometimes like ‘I have this music video idea’ oh wait no that’s actually impossible. What I love about it though means finding other creatives who are passionate about the project because if you think about it, if you're signed, they would probably organise all of those collaborations for you. So that part of it has been incredibly rewarding, just meeting creatives and having real connections with people is what it’s all about for me.

Your ear for a good pop hook is unmatched. You just get it! What have you been listening to

lately? Are there any artists or records that have really lit a fire under you

creatively?

Aw thank you!! I’ve always considered myself a melodic artist first and foremost. Lyrics and the singing part is important for sure but ever since I was a kid, it was always the melody. If Beyonce’s team called me up and asked me to attend her next song writing camp and just come up with melodies, that would be my dream job haha! I’ve been loving Naomi Scott lately, she’s definitely inspired me.

Looking back over your musical journey, is there a particular moment you're

especially proud of that perhaps didn't get the attention it deserved?

That’s a hard one, I think all of my releases I am so proud of but ‘Want You To Know’ would have to be it. That was the first single I put out not having any team, I managed to get the song signed and did a music video etc. It was crazy and so fun.

What's something about Asta away from the microphone that might surprise

people? Any unexpected obsessions, peculiar habits or completely unmusical

talents?

Oh gosh you know what, finding a bargain in a thrift store and then selling it for three times the price on Depop. I’m a hustler, I know what’s trending and I always have my finger on the pulse!

And finally, what comes after ‘DRIP’? Are we hearing the first taste of a bigger

body of work, and can we expect to see you back on stage soon?

I have so many songs I'd love to put out! If I get my hands on some more funding I will be putting out more absolutely. Organising a show is something I really want to do for sure, I’m learning at the moment how to do that and what the venues are here now in Hobart. It’s been a while since I’ve been back here in Tassie so I’m still getting my bearings!

BONUS QUESTION: PAY IT FORWARD

Heatseeker is all about discovering and championing great music. Who's an artist

you reckon deserves a little more heat right now, and why should we all be

listening?

Bella Amor! She’s making some great pop tracks at the moment. Check her out :)
