Nic McKenzie of Deep Sea Arcade poses in front of a wall of vinyl records
Nic McKenzie

Deep Sea Arcade has been a cornerstone of the Aussie indie music landscape since the release of their 2012 debut Outlands. The album’s dreamy, psychedelic and cinematic charm captured hearts worldwide and, over a decade later, still holds its place as a modern classic. That’s why we were so proud to feature Outlands as Waxx Lyrical’s Record of the Month for December 2024.

In an exclusive interview, frontman Nic McKenzie sits down to reflect on the golden days of the early 2010s, the art of album curation—especially for vinyl—and what lies ahead for Deep Sea Arcade. Nic also shares the profoundly personal journey of losing his creative partner, Nick Weaver, and how this loss has shaped the band’s evolution.

From behind-the-scenes stories of recording Outlands to his favourite vinyl digging spots, Nic gives us a glimpse into the life of a true music aficionado.
