Emerging once again from the unending waves crashing upon our fragile time-craft — adrift on the eternal ocean and taking on water — Dirty Three are back. Tangled in seaweed, unbothered by the elements, and wasting not a minute more. Because nothing is guaranteed.
Their first album in over a decade — the long-awaited follow-up to 2012’s Toward the Low Sun — came together the only way it could: they flew in, got in a room, and started playing. End of story. What else is there to say or do but that?
Formed in Melbourne in 1992, Warren Ellis, Mick Turner and Jim White redefined what an instrumental trio could be — guitar, drums, violin — and within a few short years they’d broken out: out of Australia, out of categories, out of their own skins. Over a decade of relentless touring and seven monumental albums followed, each one a howl of beauty, ache, and transcendence.
Since then, their individual paths have woven through a staggering array of collaborators — Bill Callahan, Cat Power, Nick Cave, Marianne Faithfull, Will Oldham, PJ Harvey, Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile, and many more — but every so often, the planets realign. They gather, renew the vow, and let the current take them again.
